Definition

MTBF means Mean Time Between Failures. It estimates the average operating time between failures for repairable assets. MTTR means Mean Time To Repair or Restore. It estimates the average time required to return an asset to required function after failure.

Together, MTBF and MTTR help teams understand reliability, maintainability, availability, spare-parts strategy, and maintenance effectiveness.

History

MTBF and MTTR come from reliability engineering and maintenance management. They became common in manufacturing, utilities, aerospace, IT, and equipment-intensive operations because uptime depends on both failure frequency and restoration speed.

When to Use

Use MTBF and MTTR when analyzing equipment downtime, reliability improvement, planned maintenance, spare-parts needs, OEE availability losses, or lifecycle cost. They are useful for repairable assets with meaningful failure and restoration records.
